One of the most famous gorges of the area is the Topolia gorge starting in the village of Kotsomatsades. The road to Kissamos twists and turns next to the gorge and passes through a small tunnel of the rock on the way to the village. There one can enjoy the refreshing waters, the chestnut trees, the olive trees, the poplar trees and the beautiful and colorful bougainvilleas.
This is a unique gorge with no human interference. The nature here is free and wild!. The path begins from the village of Agioi (northwest of Paleochora) and ends after 5.0 kilometers at Coundoudiana/Sassalos.
The gorge starts at an altitude of 550 meters in the village of Agia Irini and is 7.5 kilometers long. After an hour and a half walk, you reach the blissful small coastal village Sougia which is east of Paleochora.
The Anidri gorge has the closest proximity to Paleochora. The nature here is wild but friendly at the same time. The green surroundings offer the visitor the chance to enjoy many of the most representative plants of the Mediterranean. Here you can find the famous dictamnus, sage and oregano of the Cretan land.
